End of year Team Reports for all juvenile competitive teams follow:

U17 Boys Team Report

This group of boys did very well this year winning the boys league. There were only three teams in the boy’s league. These games were played home and away. They drew one game and won the rest. On the boys team you had David O’ Donovan Chris Kelleher Sean Whelan and Cian Herlihy. Liam Toebes was a substitute on the team. David and Chris won various awards in Cork and Munster as well as playing for Cork in the inter-county championships and won the Munster title. This was the last year for David Chris and Cian. I wish them the best of luck next year in the adult section.

U17 Mixed Team Report

This group of boys and girls did very well this year. There were four teams in the mixed league and this was home and away. The mixed team won all their games. On the mixed team were David Chris and Sean, and Cian was a sub. The girls were Orla Coghlan Sara Leacy and Caoimhe Coghlan. Jessica Hanley Liadh Whelan and Eadaoin Coghlan were subs on the team. Orla Coghlan also played for Cork at u17 as well. This was the last year for Orla and Sara. I wish them the best of luck next year in the adult section.

U15 Boys Team Report

Andrew Dunlea, Daniel Barry, Liam Toebes, Niall Quirke and Stephen Holden represented the club in the U15 div 2 section.  The other teams in this section were Ladysbridge, St Mary’s Dunmanway and Banteer.  The games were played in central venues over 3 days, each team playing 6 games.  Andrew led the team on each occasion; spreading the shuttles from side to side and making his opponents run for their lives.  Daniel followed this up with a very strong serving game, smashing the shuttles whenever he got the opportunity.  Liam and Niall combined for the doubles with Niall looking after the back, confounding everyone with his remarkable backhand and Liam finishing the points at the front with his tricky drop shots.  Stephen in his first year playing in competition did very well; a bright future is ahead for him.   The top 2 teams to come out of the league, Carrigaline and Ladysbridge played a final on March 26th with the match going in Ladysbridge’s favour.  Well done to all and see you again in September

U13 Girls Team Report

The U13 Girls team of Caoimhe Coghlan, Liadh Whelan, Eadaoin Coghlan and Rebecca Cantwell competed strongly in the division 2 league. The league originally had 6 teams and matches were played at a central venue with the first day’s play taking place at Carrigtwohill. Carrigaline had a good start to the competition beating St. Marys and just losing to last year’s winners Knockrha 4-2. After this days competition it was decided to split the league into division 2 and division 3 sections with Carrigaline in division 2 with Ladysbridge and Knockrha. Caoimhe was also handicapped by having to start her matches at -4. On the second days competition Carrigaline again had a close game against Knockrha but again lost 4-2. Ladysbridge also proved too strong winning 5-1. On the final days competition Carrigaline showed great resilience by drawing with Knockrha 3-3 but again Ladysbridge proved too strong winning 5-1 and claiming the league.

Well done to Caoimhe, Liadh, Eadaoin and Rebecca!

U13 Mixed Team Report

The U13 Mixed team of Liam Toebes, Caoimhe Coghlan, Ronan Quirke, Liadh Whelan, Frank Toebes, Eadaoin Coghlan and Adam Barry competed strongly in the mixed league. They had a great start beating Banteer 5-2 in their first match. Next up was St. Marys who had two Cork county champion boys on their team. Carrigaline were without Ronan Quirke for this game but Adam Barry came into the team and put up a great performance. Carrigaline lost this match 4-3. Next up was Ladysbridge-C team, with Adam Barry again coming into the team as Ronan was unavailable.  Carrigaline put in a great performance and eventually won 6-1. Next up were Dromtarriff and in a must win game to stay in the competition Carrigaline again came up with the goods to win 5-2. This performance put them into the semi-final against Ladysbridge-A. However on this occasion Ladysbridge proved too strong winning 4-2 with the final game not played.

All in all a great performance by this U13 team that was made up of 3 U13 and 4 U11 players!

U11 Boys Team Report

Most of the Cork County Juvenile league matches were played in central venues this year to cut down on time spent travelling to matches.   Ronan Quirke, Frank Toebes, Adam Barry and Craig O’Byrne represented the Carrigaline club in the U11 boys section.  The other teams in this section were Ladysbridge, Walterstown Cobh, St Mary’s Dunmanway and three teams from Banteer.  The games were spread over 3 days.  The Carrigaline team did well in days 1 and 2, playing 4 teams and losing only to Banteer A.  Ronan played out of his skin against the Dunmanway and Banteer teams, on both occasions forcing the best from Cork County players on the opposite side of the net.  Adam and Craig formed a very strong pairing in the doubles, improving as the season progressed.  Frank and Ronan made up the other steady doubles partnership with Ronan spreading the play around from the back and Frank pouncing on any opportunity at the front.  Hopes of getting to the final however were dashed when Carrigaline couldn’t field a team on the third day, missing the last 2 matches.  Despite a disappointing end to the season, the team played really well. Well done to all who took part and better luck next year – beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach!

U17 Mixed – Cork County Final Match Report

The Carrigaline U17 mixed team took part in the county final on Friday April 8th. Dromtarriff have three girls on the Cork County U17 team and we were missing Orla Coghlan who is studying in France at the moment. Orla won her singles the last time we played so we were really going to miss her. To replace her we had to go all the way down to u 11 to her young sister Eadaoin. Eadaoin is one of the best in the county at u11 but up against the best u 17s the girls  were up against it. First up was Chris Kelleher. Chris won his singles 21-8  21-8. Sara Leacy moved up to number one for singles but her opponent was too strong for her. She lost in two sets. Next up was Caoimhe and Eadaoin Coghlan in the girls doubles. Again Dromtarriff were just too strong and they lost in two sets. The boy’s doubles were next with David O Donovan and Sean Whelan. They won their first set 21- 13. As you do, you relax for the next set and they gave away a big lead and lost 21-19. This was a game we had to win going into the mixed doubles. Again they were slow to start the third set and gave away a big lead. They took the lead for the first time in this set when David landed two short serves on the line to lead 21- 20. These two serves broke Dromtarriff’s hearts and we went on to win 23-21. So it was two all going into the mixed doubles. Chris and Sara were first up on court one and David and Caoimhe were on court two. Chris and Sara lost their first set 21-18. David and Caoimhe won their first set 21-10. David and Caoimhe were score for score in the second set and won a thriller 22-20. Over on the other court Chris had to play some of his best badminton to keep us alive. Chris and Sara won the second set 21-10. By now Sean and Eadaoin had their fingers crossed it would not go to third mixed. Chris and Sara got off to a great start and won the third set 21-13. Four two and county champions and Sean and Eadaoin did not have to play. So it was off to the golden arches for something to eat and celebrate a fantastic performance!

U17 Boys – Cork County Final Match Report

The Carrigaline U17 boy’s team took part in the county final on Sunday April 3rd. They played Carrigtwohill, a team they met earlier in the year when they drew three all. Chris Kelleher won first singles 21-6 21-15. David O’Donovan won second singles 21-10 21-9. I can’t talk these two boys up, number one and two in the county they were always going to win but they had to go out and do it. Next up was Cian Herlihy, he had a tough game but lost in two sets 21-15 21-14. Sean Whelan is the most improved player on this team. He played fourth singles. After losing this game earlier in the year Sean came up with the goods this time. Sean won 21-18 21-16. Three one up with two doubles to go: Chris and David won first doubles to make it four one and county champions. Cian and Sean had only pride to play for. They lost the first set 21-15. With the title won they never gave up and won the next two sets 21-18 21-18. Sean is the only player under age next year.  Chris, David and Cian will go on to play with an adult team next year.

Inter County – 05th March 2011

The Munster Inter-County juvenile championships were played on Saturday the 05th of March in Killarney. Carrigaline club was represented on the Cork team by Orla Coghlan (U17). (Orla was the only player from Carrigaline eligible to play as the handicap system meant that Cork was not allowed to play their top 2 players at U17 and their top player at U13).

Three counties took part at U17 – Cork, Waterford and Clare. In a highly entertaining competition Cork took runners up spot by beating Waterford but narrowly losing to Clare. Well done to Orla who played very well on the day – winning 3 out of 4 games.

Munster U11 & U15 Juveniles – Report

The Munster open for U11 and U15 juveniles took place on Saturday March the 5th in UL. Carrigaline was represented at U15 by Caoimhe Coghlan.  At U11 Division 1 Carrigaline was represented by Ronan Quirke and Eadaoin Coghlan. Carrigaline had no entries at U15 or U11 Division 2.

At U15 level Caoimhe Coghlan was disappointed to lose her opening singles game to a girl she had competed with and beaten on previous occasions. As a result she competed in the plate. Her first match in the plate was against a girl she had also played before but had never beaten.  Caoimhe reversed her fortunes here by winning this game 21-14. She then went on to win the semi-final game 21-17 to secure her place in the final. Caoimhe was eventually beaten in the final 21-8.

Carrigaline players also competed in the U11 division 1 competition. Ronan Quirke won his first singles match well but was unfortunate to meet and lose to the number 1 seed in the next round. Similarly Eadaoin Coghlan was unfortunate to lose to the eventual overall winner in her first game. Eadaoin then went on to compete in the plate but was defeated in the semi-final in a closely fought game against Aoife Bernhard of Ladysbridge. Ronan and Eadaoin combined forces in the mixed doubles. They won their first match but were unfortunate to lose their next match – achieving match point in the second game but losing 22-20.

Caoimhe, Ronan & Eadaoin also competed in the doubles competitions with partners from outside the club and reached quarter finals in their respective competitions, but the standard of other pairings proved too strong at this stage.

Well done to Ronan, Caoimhe, and Eadaoin!

U15 Boys Match – Report

On Friday 25th Feb, the last matches of the U15 Div 2 league were played in the Bishopstown GAA Hall (Melbourne).  Andrew Dunlea, Daniel Barry, Niall Quirke and Stephen Holden represented the club. There were 2 teams to play: Ladsybridge and Banteer.  Two close matches with Carrigaline winning 6-4 against Banteer and losing 5-7 to Ladysbridge.  The league results are currently being compiled but we expect the team has made it to the semi-finals.

U11 Boys Match – Report

On Sunday Feb 13th, in a cold and windy Donoughmore, the second round of the U11 league games was held.  Carrigaline, represented by Ronan Quirke, Adam Barry, Craig O’Byrne and Frank Toebes, met with Ladysbridge and Banteer A.   Banteer A proved very strong and took all games except one where Ronan played valiantly against Cathal O’Donoghue, losing the first set 21-19 and winning the second 21-17.  Ladysbridge provided more even opposition and the final score was 7-5 in Carrigaline’s favour.  Well done to all who played.

U13 Mixed Match – Report

The Carrigaline U13 mixed team played away to Drumtarriff on Wednesday 23rd March. This was a must win match if Carrigaline were to qualify for the county semi-finals.  Participating for Carrigaline were Liam Toebes, Frank Toebes, Ronan Quirke, Caoimhe Coghlan, Eadaoin Coghlan and Liadh Whelan.

First up was the boy’s singles game where Drumtarriff got off to a flying start when Thomas Howard bet Liam Toebes in two straight sets. In the girls singles Drumtarriff also looked to have the edge when they went into a 1 set lead, but Caoimhe Coghlan fought back to take the next two sets. And level the match at 1 all.

Next up were the doubles games. Carrigaline pushed on to  take a 3-1 lead with doubles pairings of Liadh Whelan+Eadaoin Coghlan, and Ronan Quirke+Frank Toebes both winning their games in 2 straight sets.

Drumtarriff then won the first mixed game beating Liam+Caoimhe in two straight sets.  However Ronan and Liadh put the match beyond doubt by winning their game in 2 sets – giving Carrigaline a 4-2 lead. The final game was a closely fought contest, with Frank+Eadaoin eventually winning in 3 sets.

The final score was 5-2 to Carrigaline.

Munster U13 & U17 Juveniles

The Munster open for U13 and U17 juveniles took place on Sunday February the 20th in UL. Carrigaline was represented at U17 by Chris Kelleher and by Orla Coghlan.  At U13 Division 1 Carrigaline was represented by Caoimhe Coghlan and Eadaoin Coghlan. At U13 Division 2 Carrigaline was represented by Liam Toebes, Liadh Whelan and Rebecca Cantwell.

At U17 level Chris Kelleher won the boys singles competition outright and was runner up in the doubles and mixed doubles competitions playing with partners from outside the Carrigaline club.

Carrigaline players also achieved success in the U13 division 2 competitions with Liam Toebes and Liadh Whelan achieving runners up in the mixed competition. Liam was also runners up in the doubles competition playing with a partner from outside Carrigaline.

Orla, Caoimhe, Eadaoin and Rebecca also competed strongly and were unlucky to meet very strong opposition at early stages of their competitions.

Congratulations to all those who participated from Carrigaline badminton club.

U11 Cork County Division 1 Championships

The U11 Division 1 Championships were held in Mahon on February 6th. It was a busy day with players entered in up to 3 categories, singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Adam Barry, Craig O’Byrne, Danu Ní Thuama, Eadaoin Coghlan, Frank Toebes and Ronan Quirke represented the club.  Frank won 2 games of singles but was defeated in the semi-finals by a Banteer player.  There was early success with Craig and Adam winning the doubles plate.  Eadaoin and Ronan made it to the mixed doubles final, what a nail-biting game that was!  Evenly matched players with some extremely long rallies, however Carrigaline came out on the wrong side of the scores and were narrowly defeated by the very robust opposition provided by a Banteer pairing.  Danu and Eadaoin also made it to the finals, some good rallies and strong play but were pipped to the winning post by a Ladysbridge pairing.  Eadaoin had a marathon of a day making it to the singles finals as well, even though she was still recovering from an illness during the week, a great match that went the full distance but just didn’t work in Eadaoin’s favour.  Congratulations to all who played and thanks to Carmel Motherway and Wendy O’Mahony for organising the event.

Cork County Division 2 Championships
Carrigaline Badminton Club was well represented at the Cork County Juvenile Division 2 Championship held in Carrigtwohill recently.  Liadh Whelan, Chloe Tobin, Liam and Frank Toebes entered the U13 section.  Declan Holland, Rory O’Herlihy, Andrew Dunlea and Daniel Barry played in the U15s.   Some great games were played with Andrew Dunlea winning the U15 boys singles and Liam Toebes winning the U13 boys singles and taking the doubles as well with the help of his brother Frank.  Well done to everyone who took part.

P1000086

Cork County Division 1 Championships

Eight members of the Carrigaline badminton club took part in the Cork division 1 badminton championships at Mahon over the weekend. They were very successful in reaching 6 finals and winning 4 of these.

Four boys from Carrigaline took part at U17 level in the singles and doubles competitions – Chris Kelleher, David O’Donovan, Cain O’Herlihy and Andy Forsythe. Chris Kelleher and David O’Donovan fought off all contenders to reach the singles final with Chris Kelleher winning a tightly fought encounter in two sets 21-17, 21-19. Chris and David then joined forces to win the boys doubles competition also.

Orla Coghlan competed at U17 in the girl’s singles and girl’s doubles.  Orla was unlucky to lose the girls singles semi-final to the overall winner. The match went to three sets with Orla winning the first set 21-17, losing the second set 21-15 and conceding the third set 21-17 after leading 17-15 at one point.  Orla was also unlucky to lose the girls doubles final – again winning the first set but loosing the next two in a highly entertaining final.  Orla then teamed up with Chris Kelleher in the mixed doubles competition and the pairing won the final in two straight sets.

At U13 level Caoimhe Coghlan entered the girl’s singles, girl’s doubles and the girl’s mixed doubles, while Eadaoin Coghlan entered the girl’s singles and the mixed doubles. In the singles Caoimhe battled hard to reach the final. She then went on to win the final in 2 sets, coming from 11-16 behind in the second to win 21-18. Caoimhe also reached the girls doubles final and looked on course to win having taking the first set. However in a thrilling encounter which saw Caoimhe at match point in the third set, she was eventually beaten 20-22. Caoimhe also competed in the mixed doubles competition but was beaten in the semi finals.

Overall this was a fine performance by Carrigaline in the Cork County Championship with four of the eight participants becoming county champions.

U13 Mixed Competition 06th January 2011

Carrigaline U13 mixed team played Ladysbridge-C team on Thursday the 6th of January.  First up were the mixed games. Carrigaline got off to a great start winning all three mixed matches with pairings of Caoimhe Coghlan & Liam Toebes, Liadh Whelan & Adam Barry and Eadaoin Coghlan & Frank Toebes all winning by 2 sets to love.  Next up were the doubles games. Frank Toebes and Adam Barry put up a fine display and won their game comfortably putting the match beyond doubt. Eadaoin Coghlan and Liadh Whelan had a tougher game, eventually losing their two sets. Carrigaline then finished strongly with Caoimhe Coghlan and Liam Toebes both winning both their singles games. The eventual score was 6-1 to Carrigaline.

Well done to Frank, Liam, Adam, Liadh, Eadaoin, and Caoimhe!

U17 Mixed Competition 05th January 2011

Carrigaline U17 mixed team played Drumtarrif on Wednesday the 5th of January.  First up were the singles games. Carrigaline got off to a flying start with Chris Kelleher winning his game comfortably. Then Orla Coghlan had an enthralling singles game losing the first set 22-20 but coming back strongly to win the second two sets.  Next up were the doubles matches. The boys doubles was also a very close contest with David O’Donovan and Sean Whelan coming back from 18-20 down to win the first set 22-20, they then went on to win the second set thereby giving Carrigaline a 3 game lead. Carrigaline pairing of Sarah Leacy and Caoimhe Coghlan then lost their game to a very strong Drumtarrif girls doubles pairing. Next up were the three mixed games which were run in parallel. Caoimhe Coghlan & Sean Whelan lost their game to bring the match back to 3-2 with two games still in progress. David O’Donovan and Sarah Leacy then won their game to put the match beyond the reach of Drumtarrif.  Finally Chris Kelleher & Orla Coghlan came from being one set down to win their game 2 sets to 1.  Overall it was a fine win for this team who are so far unbeaten with half their matches played.

Well done to Chris, Orla, David, Sarah, Sean and Caoimhe

U13 Mixed Competition 02nd January 2011

Carrigaline U13 mixed team played St. Mary’s of Dunmanway on Sunday the 2nd of January.  First up were the singles games. Eadaoin Coghlan won the girls competition and Liam Toebes put up a good fight but eventually lost to the reigning Munster champion.  Similarly in the doubles competition Liadh Whelan and Caoimhe Coghlan won the girls match with Frank Toebes and Adam Barry pushing Dunmanway all the way but eventually losing. So it was all square coming into the 3 mixed matches.

Dunmanway ultimately proved too strong with the pairings of Caoimhe & Adam, plus Liadh & Liam both losing.  Eadaoin & Frank won their match but overall the eventual score was 7-3 to Dunmanway.

Well done to Frank, Liam, Adam, Liadh, Eadaoin, and Caoimhe for putting up a strong fight which they were unlucky to lose.

U13 Mixed Competition – 11th December 2010

Carrigaline u13 mixed team played Banteer on Saturday the 11th December. The format is a boy’s singles and a girl’s singles, a boy’s doubles and a girl’s doubles, and 3 mixed games.

Carrigaline started strongly with Ronan Quirke wining the boy’s singles and Caoimhe Coghlan winning the girls singles. Carrigaline girls doubles pairing of Liadh Whelan and Eadaoin Coghlan won their doubles game to open a 3 game lead. Banteer then staged a comeback winning the boys doubles and the first mixed.

With the score at 3-2 and two mixed games yet to be played it was all to play for. However the mixed pairing of Liam Toebes and Liadh Whelan won their mixed match well putting the contest beyond Banteer’s reach.  Carrigaline also won the closely contested final mixed match with Frank Toebes and Eadaoin Coghlan coming from behind to win an exciting game.

The final score was 5-2 to Carrigaline. Well done Carrigaline!

Inter County – 27th November 2010

The Munster Inter-County championships were played 27th November weekend in Killarney. Carrigaline had 4 players on the Cork team.

Chris Kelleher and David O’Donovan were number 1 & 2 on the U17 team, Caoimhe Coghlan was number 1 on the U13 team and Eadaoin Coghlan was number 3 on the U11 team. Each match had 10 games made up of 2 boys’ singles, 2 girls’ singles, 2 boys’ doubles, 2 girls’ doubles, and 2 mixed doubles. At U17 Kerry gave Cork the hardest game – the result was 5 games each. Going into the last round Cork had to beat Clare in all 10 games, this was a lot of pressure for these young players. Against all odds Cork came out on top. Chris was captain and accepted the trophy for the Cork team. At under -13, Cork beat Waterford and Kerry to meet Claire in the final. Cork played excellently but just came up short against a very strong Clare side.  Caoimhe was captain and accepted the runners up trophy on behalf of the Cork team.  At under -11 Cork managed to get revenge by beating Clare in the final – Eadaoin playing a key part by winning all her matches.

Well done to Chris, David, Caoimhe and Eadaoin!

Carrigaline U13 Girls Division 2 – November 20th

Carrigaline U13 girls took part in the division-2 badminton day in Carrigtwohill on November 20th.  The team consisted of Caoimhe Coghlan, Liadh Whelan, Eadaoin Coghlan and Rebecca Cantwell. They played two matches, the first against Knockrha and the second against St Mary’s of Dunmanway.

The first match was tough as Knockrha won this competition last year.  Carrigaline won the first singles in a three set thriller and were very unfortunate to lose the second singles in another three set thriller. Knockrha then went on to win the next two singles games to give them a 3-1 lead. Carrigaline then pulled one back by winning the first doubles but unfortunately lost the final doubles in another three set thriller! Knockrha eventually won the match 4-2.

Carrigaline played St. Mary’s in the second game.  Again the opening singles proved to be very close with Carrigaline winning by the tightest of margins.  Carrigaline then comfortably won the next two singles games and were very unlucky not to win the fourth singles which went to 3 sets.  Carrigaline were 3-1 up going into the doubles games and lost the first doubles giving St Mary’s the chance of levelling the match. However a strong performance by Carrigaline’s final doubles pairing ensured victory for Carrigaline. Carrigaline eventually won 4-2.

Well done to Caoimhe, Liadh, Eadaoin and Rebecca!
